INFO

With St. Basil Secondary School closing its doors at the end of this school year, the "Remembering St. Basil Secondary School" page is your official, school-sanctioned home of all things St. Basil. Run by SBSS Chaplaincy Leader, Stephanie Parniak, this is the place where we can all share our favorite memories from 1991 to present day.

On September 4, 1991, 167 grade 9 students entered the halls of the newly established St. Basil Secondary School on St. George’s Avenue, under the leadership of Mr. Barbeau. This co-ed Catholic high school was named in honour of the Basilian Fathers for their many contributions to Catholic education in Sault Ste. Marie.

Over the next twenty-four years, the school, which began with 12 staff and two hallways, grew to a staff of over 60, enrolled nearly 1000 students and housed a new gym, weight room, cafeteria, amphitheatre, rotunda, specialized classrooms for the Independent Living Skills (ILS) program and a dark room for photography. As growth continued, the school expanded to include a number of portables, a foods room/Basil Bistro, dance studio and a music room named after the Sisters of St. Joseph, who were instrumental in initiating a secondary school music program.

In 2012, the school celebrated the opening of the St. Basil Chapel representing the culmination of a dream to have a sacred space in the school. The students continued to artistically enhance the chapel through sculpture, stained glass and photography as their gift to future generations of students.

The St. Basil family celebrated and lived their faith through daily prayer, liturgies and outreach to people in need both locally and globally. The school became fondly known as “Home of the Saints” and the students enjoyed being a part of this caring school family, which offered strong academic and athletic programs while always providing opportunities for fun and friendship. The pride and passion of the sports teams supported by their spirited fans led to many team championships.

Through living their faith, excellence in academics and athletics, the students and staff of St. Basil Secondary truly lived the school motto: To Teach, To Build, To Serve.

May the spirit of St. Basil continue to live in our hearts and lives as we strive to follow the teachings of Christ, build community and live out our call to love and serve.
